This report examines how Character.AI and Google are resolving multiple lawsuits over allegations that AI chatbot interactions contributed to teen self-harm, highlighting growing legal scrutiny around artificial intelligence safety, accountability, and protections fo.r minors

Character.AI and Google have reached settlement agreements in multiple lawsuits involving allegations that interactions with AI chatbots contributed to teen self-harm and suicide, according to recent court filings. The agreements, disclosed in federal court, aim to resolve claims brought by families who alleged that chatbot design and oversight failures played a role in severe mental health outcomes among minors.

While the financial and legal terms of the settlements have not been made public, both companies informed the court that a mediated resolution has been achieved in principle. The cases are currently paused to allow time for final documentation and judicial approval. Representatives for Character.AI and the legal team representing affected families have declined to comment, and Google has not issued a public statement regarding the outcome.

One of the most closely watched cases centered on claims that a Character.AI chatbot themed around a popular fantasy series fostered emotional dependency in a teenage user, ultimately contributing to a tragic outcome. The lawsuit argued that Google should share responsibility as a co-developer due to its involvement through funding, technical resources, and prior employment ties with Character.AI’s founders.

In response to growing scrutiny, Character.AI introduced a series of safety-focused updates aimed at protecting younger users. These measures included deploying a separate large language model for users under 18 with stricter content limitations, expanding parental control features, and later restricting minors from accessing open-ended character-based conversations altogether. The changes reflect broader industry concerns around AI chatbot safety and responsible deployment.
